Scoliosis Assessment

$300.00

This package contains two parts – a one-hour assessment and a half-hour review of personalised exercise program based on the Schroth approach. If you have private health insurance, rebate is typically available for the treatment depending on the type and level of your coverage.

For small and stable curves less than 10 degrees, it usually does not affect appearance or function. Regular monitoring will suffice. However, if a scoliotic curvature is discovered at an early age, the likelihood of curve progression is high and it is worth early intervention. Other than a wait-and-see approach, there is more that can be done.

In the assessment, we will take a comprehensive medical history, examine your scoliosis, review your X-rays, observe and conduct a thorough examination of your spine and measure Cobb angle and the angle of trunk rotation (ATR), to help design your own individual set of exercises. In the half-hour appointment, we review your exercises and discuss any concerns or questions you might have.

Why do we need to personalise scoliosis exercises?

We go through greater details in these two articles:

Early detection of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

Scoliosis

Every curve and every child is different. Some children have a single large thoracic curve or lumbar curve, while others may have two curves. Then there is the amount of rotation, rib involvement, risk of progression due to the growth spurt, and any number of compensatory changes that may occur as a result.

We will show you how to perform each of the exercises and shoot videos as necessary to help you remember the details. There may be a number of ADL (activities of daily living) modifications, e.g. sitting or standing, etc.

If there is any other treatment recommended, e.g. bracing is necessary, we will make the necessary referral.
